PHENOM engages in grassroots organizing, policy analysis, education and advocacy in leading the fight for affordable, well-funded, high quality public higher education in Massachusetts.
Invest in Public Higher Education

For a Great State of Mind is PHENOM’s multi-year grassroots campaign to have Massachusetts dramatically increase its investment in public higher education and lower the costs for students. With the rising cost of tuition and fees, immigrants, the poor, and increasingly the middle class are being squeezed out of higher education, at exactly the same time that college is becoming increasingly necessary for the well-being of our residents and for the economic future of the state. Learn more about the campaign.

Let’s Be Average! Massachusetts is 46th in the country in per capita support for higher education, and cut its support more than any other state in the last 5 years. Since 1990 funding for need-based financial aid declined by 53%, while costs have doubled at 4-year colleges and increased by 60% at 2-year colleges. PHENOM’s campaign goal is get us up to the national average in state support and down to the national average in student costs. If you agree, sign on here. Public Higher Ed Day! - April 8, 2009 PDF Print E-mail

The April 8 Rally and State House Day for Public Higher Education will be PHENOM’s biggest event ever.  The theme: “Now, More than Ever, Is the Time to Invest in Public Higher Education”.

You see it every day on your campus and in your community:  Fewer people are working; more people are applying to public colleges; yesterday’s skills are insufficient for tomorrow’s jobs; and what a high school diploma meant 2 generations ago is what a college degree means today.  President Obama and members of Congress get it, but our state’s politicians haven’t yet caught on.

Call-In Day a Success PDF Print E-mail

Close to 1,000 people made calls to their legislators and the Governor on or about February 26 -- with several more campuses planning to hold their call-in day at a later time.  Our messages were simple, loud, and clear:

Now more than ever -- this is the time to invest in public higher education!

Higher education must get its fair share of the federal stimulus funds and they should be used to minimize the need for layoffs and fee increases!

Help is urgently needed for our campus operating budgets and for need-based financial aid!
